The root note is the tonal center of a key, scale, or chord. Knowing where roots live on the neck is the first step to navigating the fretboard freely. The goal is to internalize root locations across the neck so you can anchor any scale or chord in any position, in any key.

This builds the foundation for:

  • Understanding scale shapes as rooted patterns, not abstract fingerings
  • Movement between Chord Progressions
  • Connecting positions across the neck

Practice

One Note per String

Simple. Select a note and find all locations (string and frets)

Examples in for the Note C:

Frets 1–5Frets 5–8Frets 8–12

Tips:

  • At first, limit yourself between, at most, frets 1-12.
  • Use a metronome starting around 60 bpm. As you get comfortable, increase by 4-8 bpm
  • Notice the location of each note’s Octave
  • Choose notes by cycling through the Circle of Fifths

Fretboard-Wide Expansion

This exercise uses the 3 notes per string (3NPS) system. There are only 3 possible shapes. Recognize and repeat them across positions.

*The 3 possibles shapes in the 3NPS *

How to practice:

  1. Play each box (3NPS), ascending and descending starting on the low E string
  2. Call out the scale degree of each note as you play
    1. I recommend Key of C Major in order to focus on natural notes.
  3. Move to the next box and repeat up the neck

Note: This is setup for 4 string Bass. If you need more strings, challenge yourself to figure it out.
